Taipei, Nov 5Taiwanese tech giant HTC will open hundreds of virtual reality gaming arcades in Taiwan, China, Europe and the US by end 2017 under its “Viveport Arcade” programme.
The company is developing virtual reality games for its VR devices and hopes the gaming arcades will serve to promote its virtual reality Vive headset, the Taipei Times reported Saturday.
The programme will begin in Taiwan and China and then be extended to the US and Europe at an unspecified date.
HTC is hoping to expand its Viveport programme to internet cafes, movie theatres and virtual reality centres by offering a wide range of games and experiences at affordable prices.
Last week, HTC opened a virtual reality centre called Viveland in Taipei, where the public can try its products without having to buy them first for a fee ranging from $5 to $13.

San Francisco, Oct 14| After the micro-blogging platform Twitter that took down several terrorists’ accounts in recent months, it is the turn of social media giant Facebook to ramp up its counter-terrorism strategy to tackle online extremism.
According to a Quartz report, Facebook has posted a job description on its site for one counterterrorism researcher.
“The candidate will be responsible for helping drive our efforts around identifying the latest tools, tactics, and infrastructure used by terrorist actors as they affect Facebook and its ecosystems to better defend against and disrupt these threats,” the posting read.
In September, the company joined with the Israeli government to take down what that government sees as terrorist content.
Facebook has claimed to have taken down 95 per cent of the content flagged by the Israeli government.
In its continued effort to curb terrorism-related activities, the micro-blogging website Twitter recently suspended additional 235,000 accounts for violating its policies related to promotion of terrorism in the last six months.
Twitter had announced the blocking of more than 125,000 accounts earlier this year which were primarily related to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.
In addition to the account suspensions, Twitter’s global Public Policy team has expanded its partnerships with organisations working to counter violent extremism (CVE) online.

New York, Oct 4 Gender bias at workplace can influence how supervisors view a manager’s long-term potential, a new study shows.
The researchers examined a phenomenon called managerial derailment and found that supervisors can have subtle, even subconscious differences while expecting behaviour from male and female managers, which can have costly consequences for women in the workplace, most notably the loss of mentorship.
“If you’re doing performance evaluations, there’s a record in a Human Resource file you could refer to, and gender biases could be identified and dealt with,” said Joyce Bono, Professor at the University of Florida, US.
“However, perceptions of derailment potential exist in a supervisor’s head. They’re informal assessments that supervisors make, yet they have important implications for the opportunities that supervisors provide,” added Bono.
To examine gender bias in perceptions of derailment potential, the authors conducted four studies.
Two studies analysed data collected on nearly 50,000 managers enrolled in leadership development programmes and the other two were experimental studies where managers examined performance reviews of two fictitious employees whose only difference was their gender.
Bono and her colleagues found that when evaluating managers who exhibited equal levels of ineffective interpersonal behaviours, supervisors were more likely to predict derailment for women managers than for men.
Because of these negative assessments, female managers receive less mentoring.
“Sponsorship and mentoring are even more important for women than men because women are typically are less connected to those higher in the corporate hierarchy in part because there are more men than women at higher levels,” Bono added in the study published in the journal Personnel Psychology.
Bono emphasises that the negative assessments female managers receive from male supervisors are not purposeful or nefarious.
“Don’t think of the bias exhibited here as behaviour of bad people who don’t want women to get ahead. Rather, we expect women to be nicer than men, because that’s what our society has told us to expect. These beliefs influence our behaviors, often without our awareness,” the author said.

New York, Sep 7। Apple’s iPhone 6 s was the world’s top-selling smartphone model in the second quarter of 2016, a report said on Wednesday, adding that the US giant currently accounts for two of the three top-selling smartphone models shipped worldwide.
Apple shipped 14.2 million units and accounted for four per cent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide in Q2 2016, said market research firm Strategy Analytics.
“Apple’s iPhone 6s is currently the world’s most popular smartphone. The iPhone 6s is wildly popular in dozens of countries globally, due to its attractive hardware design blended with rich features such as 4K video, large multi-touch display and fingerprint security,” informed Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics.
Total global smartphone shipments grew one per cent annually from 338.0 million units in Q2 2015 to 341.5 million in Q2 2016.
“Smartphone growth is sluggish at the moment due to ongoing economic volatility worldwide, high ownership penetration in most major countries, and a lack of new innovation from device manufacturers,” added Linda Sui, director at Strategy Analytics.
The Apple iPhone 6 shipped 8.5 million units worldwide for second position and 2 per cent marketshare during Q2 2016, followed by Samsung Galaxy S7 edge in third place with 8.3 million and 2 per cent share.
“Apple iPhone 6 has been on sale for almost two years and it remains near the top of best-seller lists in many regions like Europe. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge has proven popular among high-end consumers and its curved hardware design has given the firm a differentiator,” noted Woody Oh, director at Strategy Analytics.
The news came as Apple is set to launch its Next-Gen Apple iPhone7 in San Francisco.
According to media reports, the mega event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium will unveil the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus smartphones, along with the next-generation Apple Watch.
People can pre-order the luxury smartphone from September 9 while sales may begin from September 16.
The new iPhone 7 may have a dual rear camera, a pressure-sensitive home button, Bluetooth-supported headphones, dual speakers at the bottom and Type-C interface, signalling the end of the 3.5 mm headphone jack in the iPhone family.Read more
