Hollywood is not all glamorous and dreamy as it claims to be. We often see our favourite celebs laughing, partying, enjoying and having the time of their life. But what we often miss is the dark side of the off-screen life of the rich and famous. When you are an actor, you live in a constant world of judgement, your private life is displayed and discussed on the daily tabloids like a gossip and there is always a pressure to maintain that “good image.” All this often leads to drug addiction, eating disorder and other emotional issues that plague the world today.
Today we are talking about young celebrities who have opened up about their troubles with insecurities, anxiety, addiction and extreme depression and some even took the rehab stint.
1. Selena Gomez
Since 2014, famous pop singer Selena Gomez is in rehab for the second time. Back in 2014, she was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease. In recent August, she announced her “time off” to focus on her health. As a result, she cancelled the remaining dates on her “Revival” tour. The singer has taken the rehab stint to handle the mental-health issues related to lupus including “anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.
2. Zayn Malik
The Pillow Talk heartthrob has opened up this year about how his anxiety has left him insecure and controlling. The singer was due to perform on Oct. 7, at the Autism Rocks Arena, but cancelled the concert in September because he felt he wasn’t prepared. The “anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me,” he tweeted. “With the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.” Back in June he also cancelled an appearance for similar reasons.
3. Ellie Goulding
Singer Ellie Goulding recently opened up about how she had reached breaking point when she was diagnosed with exhaustion. She was forced to cancel a string of shows in the summer, and it was a really frightening time for her. When Ellie suffered her first panic attack back in 2013, she though she was having a heart attack. The 29-year-old singer has also suffered from anxiety. She said it was so bad that she thought she was going to die at one point.
4. Amanda Seyfried
Actress Amanda Seyfried recently revealed while discussing home renovations in Allure magazine’s November issue that she has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).“You don’t see the mental illness: It’s not a mass; it’s not a cyst. But it’s there. Why do you need to prove it? If you can treat it, you treat it,” she said. Back In 2011, Amanda first revealed that she regularly meets with a therapist to cope with the panic attacks she suffered as a result of being in the public eye. Even after so many years in the spotlight she’s still working on it through therapy.
5. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has been through a lot in her life suffering from depression, eating disorder, self-harm to the point of being bullied. In 2010, she entered a three month rehab for “emotional and physical issues” when she was just 17 years old. She almost went back in 2013 specifically for her eating disorder. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder like her father, and has even battled bulimia just like her mother. She is one the most outspoken celebrities, when it comes to personal struggles and body image awareness.
6. Zac Efron
The High School Musical star gained stardom at a young age. In 2014, Zac opened up about his addiction to drugs and alcohol and his secret visit to rehab. “I was drinking a lot, way too much. I mean, you’re in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know?” Zac shared. He even revealed that he joined Alcoholics Anonymous and went to therapy to deal with addiction, which he described as a “never-ending struggle.” Now, the actor is seemingly living a healthier lifestyle.
