So let’s take a look back at Taylor Swift’s previous high-profile relationships and what were the reactions of her exes from john Mayer to Harry Styles at their inspired break-up songs.
1. ‘Back to December’ – Taylor Lautner
According to Swift, “Back to December” is the first time she ever apologised to someone in a song. It was very well speculated that the song is about Taylor Lautner, Swift’s ex-boyfriend whom she dated back in December of 2009.
Lautner confirmed these rumors and acknowledged the song while promoting the TV series Scream Queens in 2016. When Lea Michele asked Lautner “You dated Taylor Swift, I remember that,” Lautner responds by telling her that he now finds the prospect, “hilarious.”On being asked abou the song, Lautner said, “That’s what she does”.
2. ‘All Too Well’ – Jake Gyllenhaal
‘All Too Well’ is a bittersweet song from Swift’s fourth studio album Red (2012). Swift has said that the song was “the hardest to write on the album”. Later Swift told NY Magazine,“I heard from the guy that most of ‘Red’ is about,. “He was like, ‘I just listened to the album, and that was a really bittersweet experience for me. It was like going through a photo album.’ That was nice.
While Gyllenhaal was on “The Howard Stern Show” last year and Stern said that he should have married Swift and there’s “nothing sexier than a woman who can play songs and write songs,” his co-host Robin Quivers pointed out, “you have a song written about you”. To which Jake replied “Do I? I don’t know“.
3. ‘Dear John’ – John Mayer
While Taylor Swift chooses to neither affirm nor deny that this song is about John Mayer or not , the lyrics and the song title leave us with a very little doubt.
After the song came out Mayer opened up about how it made him feel: “I feel really humiliated. I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”I will say as a songwriter that I think it’s kind of cheap songwriting.” John himself penned down a song about Taylor called ‘Paper Dolls’.
4. ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ – Harry Styles
In her award acceptance speech at the BRIT 2013 Taylor fired at Styles: “I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these.”
The Sunday Times magazine interviewer asked her if she was horrified to perform “I Knew You Were Trouble” in front of Harry she says, “Well, it’s not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching.”
Speaking to Extra at the This Is US New York premiere , Harry said of the dig: “It’s alright, she likes a joke. I like a joke as much as the next guy, so it’s all good.”
5. ‘Forever & Always’ – Joe Jonas
While promoting her album “Fearless” on The Ellen Show, Taylor Swift revealed that one song of the album called Forever and always is actually her breakup song about Joe Jonas. The song even includes lyrics about Swift staring at the phone (she famously revealed that Jonas broke up with her on a 27 second phone call).
Joe opened up about the 27 second phone call on Jonas Brothers’ official blog, where he wrote : “ I called to discuss feelings with the other person. Those feelings were obviously not well received. I did not end the conversation. Someone else did. Phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk. A phone call can be pretty short when someone else ends the call.”
6. ‘Style’ – Harry Styles
During a Google Hangout with One Direction, Harry revealed how he really felt about all those new songs Taylor Swift wrote about him on 1989. On being asked , “Does that feel odd when people write songs about you, or, are you okay with that?”
Harry, without hesitation, answered perfectly, “We write from personal experience, and I think everyone does, so it would be hypocritical of us to be like, ‘Oh you can’t write about us,’ And she’s really good, so they’re good songs, “I’m really lucky in that sense.”
While this year we have seen too much drama and action in Taylor Swift’s love life following her break up with Calvin Harris and things taking a turn for the worse once photos surfaced of Taylor with Tom Hiddleston. While Taylor and Tom also recently broke up, we are pretty much confused her next song would be about which ex. What do you guys think?
